Use Claude Code or Codex on your own, or through Shuttle?

Shuttle by MoonPress doesn’t replace Claude Code or Codex. It runs on them, with your own Claude or ChatGPT account. The question is whether you want to do the technical setup yourself.

If you’re comfortable with servers and the command line, using them on your own works well and costs nothing beyond your AI plan. Shuttle is for people who want to connect their site once and start asking for changes, together with their team.

The short answer.

The AI can be the same in both cases. The difference is who connects it to your website, teaches it how your site works and lets your team in.

Use them on your own if

  • You’re comfortable setting up server access, a copy of your site’s code and the command line.
  • You want full control over what the AI is allowed to do.
  • You don’t want another subscription on top of your AI plan.
  • You work on Windows or Linux, or across many sites with your own scripts.

Use Shuttle if

  • You want to connect your site once and start asking for changes.
  • You’d rather not do any technical setup yourself.
  • You want the AI to already know your site, without writing instructions for it.
  • Your teammates should work on the same website with their own AI accounts.

What using them on your own involves.

Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan, and Codex comes with ChatGPT plans. Both can change your theme and run WordPress commands once they can reach your site.

There are two common ways to give them that reach. The first is a copy of your site’s code on your computer: you keep track of changes, test them and upload them yourself. WordPress.com’s Studio tools support this and name Claude Code among the AI tools they work with.

The second is working on the server itself. Claude Code’s desktop app can connect to a server and installs itself there the first time; the server needs enough space and the right setup. Codex can work on a server after you install it and sign in there. Either way, someone has to set up access to the server first.

Both tools let you choose how much the AI may do without asking. Claude Code can undo its own file edits, but not changes made by commands, so database changes need their own backups.

What Shuttle adds.

Connect once. You connect your site in Shuttle, and it checks that it found the right website before you start.

Nothing to install. Claude Code or Codex runs on your Mac. There’s nothing to install on your website or your server, and no access to set up yourself.

It knows your site. Shuttle learns how your site is built before your first request, so new pages come out in your design without you writing instructions.

Your team. Invite a teammate or a client to a website. Each person signs in with their own account and uses their own Claude or ChatGPT plan.

AI can make mistakes, so check each change.

What you pay for.

Using Claude Code or Codex on your own costs your AI plan: Claude Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly, and ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Both plans have usage limits that reset over time.

Shuttle adds $29 per website a month for the first 3 months, then $49. Each website includes one free guest, and extra team seats are $10 a month. You keep paying your AI plan either way. Your first payment comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Questions people ask.

Does Shuttle use my Claude or ChatGPT subscription?

Yes. Shuttle runs Claude Code or Codex on your Mac with your own account. Shuttle doesn’t sell AI usage, and your plan’s limits apply.

Can I keep the instructions I already wrote for my AI?

Yes. Add them in Shuttle, and they’re used in every conversation about that website.

Can either one undo a database change?

Not automatically. Claude Code can undo its own file edits but not database changes, and Shuttle doesn’t restore the database either. Keep backups before bigger changes.

Which should a developer choose?

If you already work in the command line, Claude Code or Codex on their own may be all you need. Shuttle helps when the rest of the team, such as a marketer or an SEO specialist, should work on the same website.
