Shuttle or hiring a WordPress developer?

A good developer or agency brings judgment, accountability and experience with complex builds. Shuttle by MoonPress lets the people who run the site make everyday changes themselves, just by asking, with their own ChatGPT or Claude account.

Most teams need both at different times. The question is which work still needs a person and which your team could do in-house.

The short answer.

Hire people for big, risky or accountable work. Use Shuttle for the steady stream of everyday changes.

Hire a developer or care plan if

  • The project is large or risky: a redesign, a migration, a complex integration or a checkout rebuild.
  • Nobody on your team has time to check and test changes.
  • You want someone responsible for updates, backups, security and fixes.
  • You need a scoped estimate, a warranty or a contract for the work.

Use Shuttle if

  • Most requests are everyday changes to copy, pages, SEO and design on the site you already have.
  • Your marketer or SEO specialist should make those changes without waiting in a queue.
  • You want less back-and-forth between an idea and the change.
  • You can check the result yourself and bring in a developer for the bigger jobs.

How hiring works.

Freelancers and agencies scope the work and quote it. Codeable, a marketplace of vetted WordPress experts, gives you one estimate based on an $80–$120 hourly rate and adds a fixed 17.5% service fee. Its example projects start at $420 for speed and security work and $980 for custom theme development, and it includes a 28-day bug-fixing warranty.

Care plans bundle maintenance with small edits. GoWP, for example, costs $0, $39 or $99 per site a month. The paid plans add automatic updates, daily backups and security scans; every plan includes a monthly allowance of AI edits, and Business adds 5 human edits a month, each a small task of about 30 minutes or less.

How Shuttle works.

Shuttle is an AI workspace for the WordPress site you already have. You connect your site once, Shuttle learns how it’s built, and then you ask for what you need in plain words: a new page, a design change, SEO fixes or a new feature.

New pages and sections come out in your site’s own design, so you don’t wait for a designer or a developer. Nothing is installed on your website, and it stays exactly where it is.

You use the ChatGPT or Claude account you already have, and your team works on the same website, each person with their own account. AI can make mistakes, so check each change, keep tasks small and keep backups before bigger changes.

What I've seen from the agency side.

I run Norml Studio, where we build and maintain WordPress sites for clients, so I’ve been the developer in this comparison. When I installed the workflow behind Shuttle for a few clients, a marketer at one business and a founder at another started making website changes themselves and stopped buying those services from us.

Bigger projects are different. A redesign, a migration or a complex integration still benefits from an experienced developer who owns the outcome.

Where they differ.

Speed of everyday changes. With a developer, each change goes through a brief and a queue. With Shuttle, the person who needs the change describes it and checks the result.

Responsibility. A developer or care plan takes responsibility for the work they agree to do. With Shuttle, your team checks the results.

Cost. Developer time is billed by the hour or by the project. Shuttle is a flat subscription per website, plus the AI plan you already have.

Maintenance. Care plans handle updates, backups and security for you. Shuttle doesn’t include a maintenance service.

Questions people ask.

Will Shuttle replace my developer?

No. Shuttle helps your team handle everyday changes. Complex projects, audits and responsibility for critical systems still benefit from a developer.

Can my developer use Shuttle too?

Yes. Invite them to the website, and they work with their own ChatGPT or Claude account.

What about care plans that include AI edits?

Some care plans, such as GoWP, now combine maintenance and human support with a monthly allowance of AI edits. If you want maintenance handled for you, that combination may fit better.
